GANDALF’S GARDEN

Tolkien’s epic was an icon of the flower power era, and this was exemplified in 1968 with the founding of Gandalf ’s Garden, both a counter-cultural magazine and a hippy café, which doubled as a meditation center in World’s End, Chelsea, London. The café served the typical countercultural fare of the times, vegetarian food and herbal tea; incense filled the air and the table talk was of yoga, Zen, and magic. The magazine, with its articles on Tolkien, Atlantis, and the Age of Aquarius, was sold not only at the café but at other outlets including the Middle-earth rock club.6

The hippy scene was characterized by long hair, loose clothes, and nudism, vegetarianism, rejection of alcohol in favor of psychedelic drugs, pacifism, ecological awareness, music, and dance. It was, like the German youth movement it so resembled, a brief golden age of idealism, creativity, and hope. Yet the hippies were to suffer a similar fate as the violence epitomized by the Vietnam War became embodied in one who was ostensibly one of their own—a drifter named Charles Manson.
